The Charger badge had been missing from the American car market for nearly 12 years when Dodge introduced a totally new concept vehicle bearing the well-known nameplate: the 1999 Charger R/T.

This new Charger was a bold departure in a number of ways. First, it had four doors. All previous Chargers had been two-door coupes. This was also the lightest, lowest and sleekest Charger yet, only 187 inches long, with a curb weight of 3,000 pounds—more than 650 pounds lighter than earlier Chargers. The concept shared a common chassis platform with the production Dodge Intrepid, but unlike the front-drive Intrepid, the show car employed rear-wheel drive.

The powertrain in the Charger R/T Concept was just as radical. The experimental 4.7-liter V8 with overhead cams ran on compressed natural gas supplied by a high-tech fuel storage system that operated at 3,600 pounds per square inch.  With 325 horsepower on tap, the sports sedan was reportedly capable of 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds and boasted a top speed of over 140 mph.

The R/T Concept’s styling took its cues from previous generations of Chargers, which helped to make it a genuine sensation on the international auto show circuit. The one-of-a-kind vehicle remained on tour through 2004, when it was finally moved aside to make room for the all-new Charger production car introduced for 2005. The latest Dodge Charger available in showrooms today shares some key styling elements with the 1999 concept car. Can you spot them?
